Ukraine has launched a series of powerful attacks against Russia in a significant escalation of their ongoing conflict, employing a barrage of advanced British Storm Shadow missiles. Analysts close to Russian President Vladimir Putin have expressed dismay at the precise and effective strikes that have targeted crucial military installations, portraying Putin as powerless in the face of the onslaught.
In a strategic move, Ukrainian warplanes deployed these UK-supplied missiles to strike a key plant located in the border region of Bryansk. This plant, known as the Silicon El plant, plays a vital role in producing advanced electrical components for various Russian military assets, including Iskander ballistic missiles, air defense systems, and submarine-launched nuclear missiles. Video footage captured one of the Storm Shadow cruise missiles hitting the factory and causing a destructive fire.
Reports suggest that up to seven British-made missiles were launched at the plant, accompanied by the use of domestically-manufactured Neptune missiles by Ukraine. The aftermath of the attack saw ambulances rushing to the scene, with casualties reported including six fatalities and 37 injuries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received news of the successful operation from General Oleksandr Syrskyi, his chief commander, praising the armed forces for their efficiency in executing the mission. However, the strikes have led to concerns within the Russian military, with some outlets criticizing the perceived vulnerability of Russian defenses and the impact on civilian morale.
In addition to the Bryansk plant, other targets were hit in the attacks, including the KuibyshevAzot chemical plant in the Samara region, vital for producing explosives for the Russian armed forces. Explosions were also reported in the Black Sea resorts of Sochi and Anapa, as well as at an ammunition storage depot in occupied Mariupol.
Furthermore, reports indicate that Sevastopol, the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, was also a target of the Ukrainian strikes. The situation worsened for Putin as news emerged that Ukraine had nearly reclaimed control of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region, despite previous boasts by Putin and his military leadership about capturing the city.
