“Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Higher Cancer Mortality”

A recent study suggests that individuals with cancer who frequently consume ultra-processed foods (UPFs) may face a nearly 60% higher risk of succumbing to the disease. Researchers in Italy discovered that those with the highest UPF intake were more prone to premature death compared to those with lower consumption levels.

UPFs have been associated with various health issues such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, and premature mortality. Common examples of UPFs include ice cream, processed meats, crisps, mass-produced bread, certain breakfast cereals, biscuits, ready meals, and sugary drinks.

These processed foods often contain excessive levels of saturated fats, salt, sugar, and additives, leaving little space in diets for more wholesome options. They are also packed with additives and ingredients not typically found in homemade meals, like preservatives, emulsifiers, and artificial colors and flavors.

The study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention by the American Association for Cancer Research, tracked 24,325 participants aged 35 and older from 2005 to 2022 in the Molise region of southern Italy. Among 802 cancer survivors who completed detailed dietary questionnaires, researchers assessed UPF consumption based on daily weight and calorie intake.

Participants were categorized into three groups based on their UPF intake ratios, while considering factors like smoking, body mass index, exercise, medical history, cancer type, and overall diet quality. Over an average follow-up of 14.6 years, 281 deaths occurred among the cancer survivors.

Individuals in the top third of UPF consumption had a 48% higher all-cause mortality rate and a 59% higher cancer-related mortality rate compared to those in the lowest third. Higher calorie proportions of UPFs exhibited similar trends for cancer-related deaths but not for other causes.

Dr. Marialaura Bonaccio from IRCCS Neuromed in Italy highlighted that the additives in processed foods can disrupt metabolic processes, gut microbiota, and trigger inflammation, potentially leading to adverse health effects compared to minimally processed or natural foods with similar nutritional content.

The study also analyzed the impact of UPF processing on inflammatory, metabolic, and cardiovascular markers in participants. Dr. Bonaccio emphasized that increased inflammation and elevated heart rate could explain the association between higher UPF consumption and heightened mortality rates among cancer survivors.

Moreover, the research team examined seven specific UPF categories, observing varied effects on mortality rates. Dr. Bonaccio emphasized the importance of reducing overall UPF consumption and shifting towards fresh, minimally processed, home-cooked meals for improved health outcomes.

She recommended checking food labels for excessive ingredients or additives, as such items are likely ultra-processed. This holistic dietary approach, focusing on reducing UPFs and embracing whole foods, is deemed the most effective strategy for enhancing health and well-being.
