“Uninsured Wildfire Victims Face Rebuilding Struggles”

Date:

Tricia Thorpe reflects on the devastating 2021 Lytton wildfire that destroyed her home five years ago, leaving her with the daunting task of rebuilding without insurance coverage. Thorpe, who has since reconstructed her home, shared the challenges of not being insured during the catastrophe, emphasizing the lack of government assistance due to her uninsured status.

The exact count of homes lost to wildfires this year remains unknown, but it is estimated that numerous families have faced total losses. Experts stress the importance of understanding insurance policies for those affected, as even fully insured individuals encounter a complex and lengthy rebuilding process post-disaster.

Annick DeGooyer, who lost her home in the 2023 McDougall Creek wildfire, highlighted the value of meticulous documentation in aiding insurance claims. She emphasized the significance of videotaping each room and its contents beforehand, underscoring the assistance it provided during the claims process.

Insurance Bureau of Canada’s vice president, Aaron Sutherland, noted that insurance policies can cover various emergency-related expenses beyond property damage, such as temporary accommodation and food costs for evacuees. Sutherland advised affected individuals to promptly initiate the claims process to expedite assistance.

Liam Corcoran, a legal expert and adjuster, highlighted the common issue of underinsured or uninsured homes in remote regions, attributing this challenge to factors like high insurance costs or inadequate fire protection infrastructure. Corcoran emphasized the importance of addressing insurance coverage gaps to mitigate risks in vulnerable areas.
