“Unison Warns UK Migration Policy Change Could Spark Windrush Redux”

Date:

Unison, the UK’s largest trade union, has cautioned that Shabana Mahmood’s proposed changes to migration policies could lead to a situation reminiscent of the Windrush scandal. The union urged the Home Secretary to reconsider plans that would extend the period for migrant workers to qualify for settlement in the UK, potentially doubling the current timeline.

According to the proposed reforms, individuals who anticipated permanent residency eligibility after five years in the UK may now face a waiting period of 10 years. Unison highlighted concerns that essential social care and low-paid workers could be left in limbo for up to 15 years under the new rules.

General secretary Andrea Egan expressed worries about the potential repercussions, stating that overlooking all consequences could result in a repeat of the Windrush debacle. She criticized the characterization of overseas social care staff as ‘low waged and low skilled,’ emphasizing the importance of recognizing and appreciating their contributions.

In response, the Government defended the changes, emphasizing the need for individuals to earn the right to settle in the UK. Shabana Mahmood clarified that exceptions would be made for fast-tracking settlement deals for NHS workers, high earners, and volunteers, although the standard waiting period would be extended to 10 years.

The proposed adjustments aim to establish a controlled immigration system, with additional years added for those claiming benefits or entering the UK illegally. Opposition leader Keir Starmer supported the measures, focusing on the concept of contribution over charity in immigration policies.

The Home Office reiterated its commitment to reducing net migration levels and ensuring that newcomers contribute positively to the country. The Home Secretary has outlined comprehensive reforms to address the shortcomings in the immigration system, prioritizing contributions from immigrants.
