Upcoming Bank Holidays Alter Benefit Payment Dates

Date:

Next week, the payment date for certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, will be moved up for many recipients due to the upcoming May bank holiday. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) does not process benefit payments on bank holidays, so payments will be made on the preceding working day instead.

If you are expecting a benefit payment on Monday, May 4, you can anticipate receiving it on Friday, May 1. Similarly, for the bank holiday on Monday, May 25, payments will be issued early on Friday, May 22.

While receiving payments in advance provides an immediate benefit, it also means a longer interval until the subsequent payment. The payment amount remains unchanged unless there have been alterations in personal circumstances. Additionally, HMRC benefits, including Child Benefit, will also be affected by this payment adjustment.

The frequency of benefit payments varies depending on the type of benefit claimed. For instance, Universal Credit is typically paid on a fixed day each month, while Child Benefit is usually disbursed every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

It is important to note that Universal Credit now substitutes several other benefits such as Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, and Housing Benefit.

If there are concerns about not receiving a payment, it is advisable to check the bank account first. In case the payment is due and not received, contacting the relevant helpline is recommended. However, since helplines are usually closed on bank holidays, any issues may need to be addressed on the next working day.
