Shocking photographs depicting a brutal mass execution by Nazis during World War 2 have surfaced for sale on eBay, more than 80 years following the tragic event, causing widespread outrage.
Previously unseen images of hero resistance fighters in Greece, who fell victim to the massacre, have been identified by grieving family members. Urgent calls have been made for the Greek government to intervene and acquire these historic photos as a tribute to the 200 men who lost their lives in the Kaisariani district of Athens on May 1, 1944, a dark chapter in WWII history.
Experts have confirmed the authenticity of the images, prompting former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to urge the government to purchase them from the eBay seller. In a letter to the parliamentary president, Tsipras emphasized that the final moments of these “Greek patriots” should not be commercialized but should be preserved by the state.
Communist Party leader Dimitris Koutsoumbas echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the invaluable historical significance of the photos as concrete evidence of Nazi atrocities. He stressed the importance of preventing these images from entering private collections or auctions, advocating for their return to Greece under the ownership of Parliament through legal means.
The auction of the photos was suspended by Belgian collector Tim de Craene out of respect for the sensitivity surrounding the images. De Craene expressed willingness to engage in discussions with Greek authorities while maintaining his legal ownership rights.
