US Defense Chief Warns: London at Risk of Iranian Missiles

Date:

United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has delivered a strong caution to the British public, suggesting that London might fall within the potential reach of Iranian missiles. Hegseth, a former television personality turned defense chief, made these remarks during a recent cabinet meeting at the White House. He highlighted Iran’s recent missile activity, pointing out that they launched missiles that surpassed the distances they had previously claimed to be capable of. Hegseth emphasized the potential threat Iran poses, specifically mentioning London being within a 4,000km range from Iran.

While there are conflicting reports regarding Iran’s missile launches targeting the US-UK base on Diego Garcia, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the military alliance could not confirm Israel’s claims in this regard. Reports indicated that Iran fired intermediate-range ballistic missiles towards the base, with one missile failing in flight and the other being intercepted by a US warship.

Following these events, UK Housing Secretary Steve Reed indicated that Iran had indeed targeted Diego Garcia, with one missile failing and the other being intercepted. However, Reed mentioned that there was no specific intelligence suggesting that Iran intended to target the UK. In response to these accusations, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the claims as part of a pattern of misinformation.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey declined to confirm whether Iran had the capability to strike London with missile attacks. He reassured the public that there was no specific assessment indicating Iranian plans to attack the UK. He highlighted the defense resources and alliances in place to protect Britain, drawing parallels between Iran’s tactics and technologies with those observed in conflicts involving Russia.

Notably, Iran had previously stated self-imposed limits on the range of its missiles, but recent events have raised concerns over their capabilities. The failed missile launch towards Diego Garcia traveled approximately 3,000km from its origin. These developments underscore ongoing tensions and uncertainties surrounding Iran’s military capabilities and intentions.
