US Government Opposes Ban on Argentina Players Over Falklands Banner

Date:

The US government opposes a potential ban on Argentina players following a FIFA investigation into the display of a banner referencing the Falkland Islands. After Argentina’s celebration with a banner proclaiming “The Falklands are Argentine” post their semi-final victory over England, there have been calls for disciplinary action.

Before the game, it was stated that flags with messages related to the Islands would be prohibited at the stadium. FIFA is currently reviewing match reports to determine if any actions should be taken. The UK Government has urged for an inquiry, emphasizing that while the World Cup does not belong to them, the Falkland Islands do, reiterating their support for the islanders’ self-determination.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has penned an open letter to FIFA, requesting the suspension of players holding the flag for the upcoming final against Spain. However, reports indicate that the White House, including officials from President Donald Trump’s team, opposes the UK government’s calls for player sanctions, defending Argentina’s right to freedom of expression.

Trump’s World Cup chief, Andrew Giuliani, has supported Argentina’s actions as an exercise of their First Amendment rights under the US Constitution. Despite this, there is acknowledgment that FIFA rules could still warrant sanctions for the players.

Argentina has a history of referencing the Falkland Islands, with previous instances leading to FIFA sanctions in 2014. In contrast, Spanish players Morata and Rodri faced a ban from FIFA for chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” during Euro 2024 celebrations.
