Dramatic video footage captures the US military destroying another suspected drugs-smuggling boat at sea, resulting in the death of one individual. The incident, shared on social media by US Southern Command, shows the vessel exploding after being targeted while speeding through the water. Following the action, Southern Command promptly alerted the US Coast Guard to initiate a search and rescue operation for potential survivors.
Since September, President Donald Trump’s initiative of targeting alleged drug-trafficking boats in Latin American waters, spanning the eastern Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, has led to the deaths of at least 194 individuals. The latest incident in the eastern Pacific Ocean resulted in two survivors, although the military has not presented evidence linking the vessels to drug transportation.
Recent scrutiny prompted the Pentagon watchdog to announce an evaluation of the US military’s adherence to established targeting protocols during such operations. The assessment will encompass the six-phase Joint Targeting Cycle, covering aspects like target development, analysis, decision-making, execution, and assessment.
While the Trump administration justifies these actions as part of the fight against Latin American drug cartels, critics question the legality of the strikes. Concerns have been raised about the lack of due process for individuals onboard the targeted vessels, emphasizing the need for law enforcement to intercept suspicious ships for proper investigation and legal proceedings.
The Washington Office on Latin America criticized the strikes for denying individuals due process and highlighted the absence of legal justification for extrajudicial executions. The organization suggested utilizing existing law enforcement resources, like the US Coast Guard, to board suspicious vessels and apprehend alleged smugglers for lawful prosecution.
In addition, both the UK and Canada have expressed reservations regarding the legality of these operations. President Trump has previously characterized the US’s actions against drug cartels in Latin America as an “armed conflict” and defended the attacks as necessary measures to combat drug trafficking.
