More than 80 bodies have been recovered from an Iranian warship after a submarine attack was carried out.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that a US submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, stating that the Iranian navy now “rests at the bottom of the Persian Gulf.” Hegseth described the Iranian navy as “ineffective, decimated, destroyed,” emphasizing that the US is committed to winning in the conflict.
According to Hegseth, an American submarine in the Indian Ocean successfully sank an Iranian warship that believed it was safe in international waters. This incident marked the first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II.
While Hegseth claimed this was the first torpedo sinking since World War II, historical records show similar incidents. For instance, during the Falklands War in 1982, Argentina’s General Belgrano was sunk by British torpedoes.
A joint rescue operation was launched by Sri Lanka’s navy and air force after the Iranian warship, Iris Dena, ran aground near Galle. The vessel, one of Iran’s newest warships, has now sunk, with 87 bodies recovered.
The mission focused on evacuating crew members after the ship reported distress. The Iris Dena is a Moudge-class frigate serving in the Southern Fleet of the Iranian Navy.
As per a navy spokesman, several bodies were found in the area where the ship sank. It is estimated that around 180 personnel were aboard the Iris Dena when the incident occurred.
In response to the distress call, Sri Lanka dispatched ships and air force planes for the rescue mission. This event unfolded amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, with ongoing military actions and airstrikes in the region.
