“Vaccine During Pregnancy Reduces Infant RSV Hospitalizations by 80%”

Date:

A vaccine administered during pregnancy has resulted in an 80% decrease in hospital admissions of infants suffering from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) chest infection, as reported by health authorities.

Over 20,000 babies were at risk of needing hospitalization after contracting RSV, a condition that commonly affects infants in their early months, causing breathing difficulties and feeding challenges.

Since 2024, pregnant women have been offered the vaccine starting from 28 weeks to lower the incidence of RSV in newborns. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) highlighted the vaccine’s “excellent protection” for vulnerable infants in a recent study.

RSV is a key reason for infant hospitalizations before their first year, with newborns under 6 months, premature infants, elderly individuals over 75, and those with compromised immune systems at heightened risk, according to the NHS.

Nearly all children contract RSV before age 2, with severe cases leading to respiratory issues requiring hospital care.

Dr. Conall Watson, leading the RSV program at the UKHSA, expressed concerns to the BBC, emphasizing the study’s findings that the vaccine provided around 85% protection when administered at least four weeks before birth.

The study indicated that delayed vaccinations still offer some defense, with Dr. Watson recommending vaccination throughout the third trimester if necessary. Analyzing data from around 300,000 births in England, the study revealed that a significant proportion of hospitalized infants had not received the vaccine.

One mother shared the harrowing experience of her son contracting RSV as a baby, emphasizing the importance of vaccination in preventing such incidents.

Dr. Watson stressed the vaccine’s role in safeguarding infants during the winter period, urging pregnant women to consider it and consult healthcare professionals for timely vaccination.

Statistics indicate that approximately 64% of pregnant women in England opt for the vaccine, with a lower rate of 53% in London.
