In Edinburgh, a violent incident unfolded as a man reportedly armed with a knife caused injuries to five individuals. The chaotic situation involved assaults, threats, robbery, and vandalism in the western part of the Scottish capital and Leith on June 19.
The series of events led to two men being found injured near Broomhill Mosque in the Sighthill area at 8:50 pm. Subsequently, a third man, believed to be a Deliveroo driver of Asian descent, was discovered injured on Telford Road, while the fourth and fifth male victims were attacked on Leith Walk.
The individuals, ranging in age from 22 to 29, sustained various injuries, with three requiring hospital treatment. Notably, several of the victims are associated with the Muslim community, as highlighted by MEND Scotland.
Following the incident, a 36-year-old Scottish man was arrested and remains in custody, with Counter-Terrorism Policing Scotland overseeing the investigation. Social media footage captured the arrest of a man on Leith Walk, who was seen being Tasered during the apprehension.
Additionally, a disturbing separate video showed a shirtless man carrying a large blade while walking along Leith Walk. The police responded to reports of vandalism in multiple retail locations across the western and northern parts of the city.
One of the affected establishments, Origano Cafe & Pizzeria on Leith Walk, had its windows smashed by an assailant, leading the owners to close the shutters for protection. Witnesses described the incident as frightening and distressing.
In response to the situation, Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton condemned the attack and emphasized the importance of unity against racism and hate. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed their dismay over the incident, denouncing the anti-Muslim hatred allegedly motivating the suspect.
The Scottish Government’s Justice Secretary Neil Gray assured the public of safety and urged anyone with information to cooperate with the authorities. He emphasized the need to combat racism and hate, underscoring the seriousness of the incident and commending the emergency services for their swift response.
