After experiencing several days of interruptions, Wabush Airport is set to recommence flight operations on Wednesday, according to PAL Airlines. The disruption was caused by the airport’s failure to meet federal firefighting and rescue requirements for commercial flights carrying more than 19 passengers due to a mechanical issue with a vehicle, as stated by Transport Canada on Monday.
In a social media update on Wednesday afternoon, PAL Airlines confirmed that the necessary firefighting equipment for passenger flights at the Labrador west airport has been reinstated. Flights 921, 922, 833, and 834 to and from the airport will resume on Wednesday. Affected passengers will receive updated travel details from the reservations team regarding their flight arrangements.
Before the flights resumed on Wednesday morning, Labrador’s Member of Parliament expressed frustration with the ongoing disruptions at the airport but remained optimistic about a swift resolution. The airport faced challenges as both of its mandated fire trucks were out of service, one undergoing maintenance and the other experiencing a part failure, leading to the suspension of operations.
The needed parts were flown in from Edmonton and arrived in Wabush overnight, with a review of the incident requested by Earle to prevent future occurrences. The airport has faced similar disruptions over the past year, including service shutdowns due to changes in firefighting requirements and extreme weather conditions causing flight cancellations.
