The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) reported to The Associated Press that the trophy belonging to the Montreal Victoire team, the Walter Cup, is currently missing. The league indicated that the trophy did not arrive at its intended destination and is working with the shipping company to locate it.
Initially scheduled to be transported to Lethbridge, Alberta, for a special event with Victoire forward Dara Greig, the Walter Cup failed to arrive in the designated container, prompting Greig to postpone her celebration. Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not assign a dedicated individual to accompany the trophy on its travels.
It is important to note that the missing Walter Cup is a replica awarded to championship-winning teams for their possession, distinct from the trophy presented on the ice during the victory celebration, which is permanently housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
The Walter Cup replica, crafted by Tiffany & Co., is a sterling silver trophy weighing around 35 pounds and standing at approximately 24 inches in height and 13 inches in width. Adorned with six W’s symbolizing the league’s original franchises and a base representing a hockey puck with engraved championship team names, the cup is a prestigious symbol of victory.
Montreal secured the Walter Cup by defeating Ottawa in a decisive Game 4 of the series, marking the first Canadian team to claim the PWHL title. The trophy is named after PWHL founder and primary benefactor, Mark Walter, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife Kimbra.
