Millions of individuals in the UK are being cautioned about the potential fatal consequences of combining two commonly prescribed medications. In the UK, where 8.6 million people use antidepressants and over 50 million are prescribed beta blockers for various conditions, researchers have discovered a dangerous interaction between these drugs.
The research revealed that when beta blockers, such as metoprolol, carvedilol, and nebivolol, are combined with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), commonly used antidepressants like fluoxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, duloxetine, and bupropion, it can lead to a significant increase in the risk of dangerously low blood pressure and abnormally slow heart rate.
The study highlighted that some antidepressants inhibit an enzyme in the liver, CYP2D6, responsible for breaking down beta blockers. This inhibition can cause a dangerous buildup of these medications in the body, leading to severe health risks. The combined use of these drugs was shown to potentially decrease blood pressure by up to 20% and increase the likelihood of a slow heart rate by 25%.
Consequences of low blood pressure range from dizziness to organ failure, while a slow heart rate can result in cardiac arrest. The findings, presented at the American Heart Association’s Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2025, emphasized the importance of caution when prescribing CYP2D6-metabolized beta blockers alongside SSRIs or other CYP2D6 inhibitors.
Dr. Inshal Jawed, the lead researcher, stressed the need for dose adjustments and close monitoring when combining these medications. She also suggested that beta blockers with lesser reliance on liver metabolism could be safer alternatives. Dr. Jawed highlighted the necessity for further investigation into this potentially life-threatening drug interaction. Symptoms to be vigilant for include dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, fainting, confusion, chest pain, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, and difficulty concentrating.
