A warning has been issued to British citizens to review their passports following data showing that more than 1.4 million UK adults may have passports expiring before the summer holidays.
According to findings by the team at low-cost airline Wizz Air, analysis of data from the HM Passport Office revealed that over 1.4 million documents are set to expire by the end of June 2026. Failure to check passport validity could lead to travel disruptions and potential holiday cancellations due to issues such as denied boarding at airports and invalidated travel insurance claims.
With the summer holiday season approaching, Wizz Air is urging travelers to verify their passport validity ahead of the peak travel period to prevent last-minute complications or trip disruptions.
For individuals traveling to European destinations from the UK, a critical post-Brexit regulation requires checking two dates on their passports. Besides the issue date, which must be within 10 years of entry into a country, travelers must ensure that the passport remains valid for at least three months beyond their planned return from EU countries or six months for some non-EU destinations.
In cases of uncertainty regarding entry requirements, UK passport holders are advised to consult the Foreign Office’s travel guidance for up-to-date information on destination-specific regulations.
Yvonne Moynihan, Managing Director at Wizz Air UK, emphasized the importance of checking passport validity to avoid disrupting summer plans. Renewing passports online or through a paper application is a straightforward process, requiring the old passport and any valid passports from other countries. More information on passport renewal can be found at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport.
Travelers are reminded to update passport details on bookings if necessary, especially if passports are nearing expiration or have been renewed recently.
