The defeat in Caerphilly, a key stronghold in Wales, prompted Streeting to compare it to the impactful Hartlepool by-election loss that led Starmer to contemplate his role as party leader.
Streeting clarified that his remarks were not intended as criticism towards the Prime Minister, expressing his support for efforts to revive the party’s prospects. In the Caerphilly contest, Labour slipped to third place with a mere 11% of the vote, marking a significant setback in a town that historically favored the party.
