“Widow Pushes for ‘Owain’s Law’ to Revolutionize Brain Cancer Care”

Date:

A widow is advocating for a change in legislation to eliminate disparities in care for individuals with brain cancer. Ellie James, who lost her husband Owain to a glioblastoma in 2024, highlights the challenges they faced in accessing tailored treatments due to the lack of frozen tissue from his surgery.

Leading a movement for patients’ rights, Mrs. James insists on the importance of allowing individuals to have their tissue frozen and stored post-surgery. This would enable them to benefit from personalized therapies and genetic assessments. She notes the inconsistent application of this practice within the NHS, resulting in uneven levels of care based on geographical location.

Advocating for what she terms “Owain’s Law,” Mrs. James urges for a legal framework that empowers patients to make decisions regarding the preservation of their tissue. She strongly believes that if such a law had been in place during her husband’s treatment, he might still be alive today.

The issue is set for deliberation in a Westminster Hall debate scheduled for Wednesday. Mr. James, a father, was diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2022, with surgeons managing to remove half of his 14cm tumor during a procedure.

Following the surgery, the family fundraised for a personalized treatment for Mr. James. However, complications arose as a significant portion of the tumor was rendered unusable for treatment after being exposed to a chemical. This limitation resulted in a reduced amount of tissue available for the required vaccine.

Despite initial success with the vaccines, including complete regression of the tumor, Mr. James eventually faced a relapse and passed away in June 2024. Mrs. James firmly believes that with the full set of vaccines initially, her husband’s outcome could have been different.

Expressing the need for patient autonomy and consent, Mrs. James emphasizes the importance of individuals having control over the storage and potential use of their tissue for future treatments or research. She views Owain’s Law as a means to provide patients with options and choices regarding their medical care.
