Thousands of individuals, including tourists, were evacuated from Crete as wildfires in Greece tragically claimed the lives of three firefighters. Two firefighters perished on the island while battling a fire near Krya Vrysi in the Rethymno region, with a third firefighter losing his life on the Greek mainland near Gytheio in the Peloponnese region.
With gusts reaching 125km/h (77mph) on Crete, approximately 8,000 people were forced to evacuate overnight but were later permitted to return to their homes. Meanwhile, in France, prominent figures George and Amal Clooney had to evacuate their residence due to the fires.
In a heartfelt letter to Brignoles’ mayor, Didier Bremond, George Clooney expressed uncertainty about the fate of their home in the village and pledged unwavering support for the community during this challenging time. The Clooneys, who relocated to France permanently in 2021, were granted French citizenship along with their twins, Ella and Alexander, in December.
Multiple European countries, including Greece, France, Spain, and Turkey, are grappling with destructive fires and drought conditions. Despite efforts to contain the fires, the situation remains critical in various regions, with devastating impacts on homes and agricultural land. The fires on Crete, particularly in the Rethymno region, continue to burn uncontrollably, prompting evacuations and emergency responses.
Evacuees in Rethymno sought refuge in temporary shelters, describing the situation as frightening, especially for tourists witnessing the flames in the hills above the village. The firefighting efforts have been intensified with the deployment of hundreds of firefighters to combat the blazes.
The Hellenic Fire Service chief expressed condolences for the fallen firefighters, Emmanouil Stratidakis and Pantelis Diamantakis, who will be laid to rest. In Spain and Portugal, additional firefighting operations are underway to manage the ongoing fires, underscoring the severity of the situation across Europe.
