Thousands of individuals have been evacuated due to rampant wildfires spreading across Spain, prompting an international call for assistance as the nation grapples with soaring temperatures. Firefighters are captured in visuals battling massive blazes swiftly moving through extremely dry vegetation in central regions of Spain, leading the government to declare a national emergency.
The Spanish weather agency AEMET forecasts temperatures exceeding 40C, emphasizing the persistent high to extreme fire risk despite some temperature drops. Forest fires are particularly uncontrollable in the Madrid autonomous region and Avila province, resulting in the evacuation of over 11,500 people. The government has sought aid from the European Union, specifically requesting aircraft for firefighting efforts.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed deep concern over the situation, acknowledging the widespread devastation caused by the fires and assuring support during the emergency and recovery phases. In the Castilla and León region, nine active fires are reported, with the Burgohondo fire in Ávila being notably severe, leading to the evacuation of over 1,500 individuals.
Residents and officials describe the fires as unprecedented, with the mayor of Burgohondo expressing astonishment at the scale of the disaster. Military emergency brigades and national firefighting units have mobilized to assist local efforts, including water-dropping aircraft.
The Avila wildfire, which ignited on Wednesday, spread rapidly, destroying the Iruelas Valley Nature Reserve and impacting a significant black vulture colony. The Madrid Health Service has prepared six hundred hospital beds for fire-related emergencies, setting up an emergency plan between hospitals and health centers.
Spain has already witnessed over 100,000 hectares burned this year, with a recent massive fire in Guadalajara and a tragic incident in southern Spain claiming thirteen lives, including seven British nationals. In a similar crisis, authorities in southwestern France have ordered mass evacuations due to large wildfires, displacing around 40,000 individuals along the Atlantic coast.
France has activated the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism alongside Spain, securing additional firefighting resources from Croatia, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to combat the escalating fire threats in the region.
