“Wizz Air Adds London-Luton to Yerevan Route”

Date:

Budget carrier Wizz Air has recently revealed plans for six additional routes departing from its hub at London Luton Airport. Among these new destinations, Yerevan stands out as an emerging hotspot for British travelers in 2026, boasting a blend of historical significance and wallet-friendly drink options.

Commencing on June 12, 2026, passengers from Luton can embark on flights to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. This route not only connects the two cities but also marks the first direct air link between the UK and Armenia, offering a potential new city excursion for many travelers. Wizz Air’s flights to Yerevan will span slightly over five hours, with fares starting at a budget-friendly £51.99 for a one-way journey.

Despite its geographical location in West Asia, Armenia is often grouped with Eastern Europe due to its cultural and historical ties. Yerevan is already a favored city break destination for Europeans, yet it remains relatively uncharted territory for Brits, with only 11,000 UK visitors in 2025. However, the advent of this new route is anticipated to attract more British tourists in 2026.

For history enthusiasts, Yerevan presents a compelling visit, being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities globally. Its architectural landscape showcases a diverse mix of styles spanning various eras, including a fusion of Soviet-era structures and contemporary designs.

Notable landmarks in Yerevan include the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, recognized as the world’s oldest cathedral dating back to the early fourth century. Initially constructed atop a Pagan temple, the cathedral has undergone numerous renovations over the years, reflecting a blend of artistic and architectural influences.

The Kond District, Yerevan’s oldest quarter, features narrow lanes, stone dwellings, and remnants of unpaved pathways. While sections of this historic neighborhood were dismantled during the Soviet era to make way for modern housing complexes, ongoing efforts are being made to revive its cultural heritage.

Often referred to as the Pink City, Yerevan’s distinct architectural charm stems from the prevalent use of local volcanic stone, lending many buildings a subtle pink tint. Republic Square, a focal point of the city, not only showcases these unique structures but also hosts the mesmerizing dancing fountains that illuminate and play music during evening hours.

Amid escalating costs across several European cities, Yerevan remains an affordable destination for a city getaway. According to Numbeo, a platform comparing living expenses, Yerevan offers prices approximately 20% lower than Warsaw, with dining out and alcohol notably more economical. Local pubs serve pints priced between £1.50 and £2, particularly for Armenian brews, while a mid-range bottle of wine averages around £7.

Travelers can find enticing accommodation deals in Yerevan, such as the centrally located Grand Hotel Yerevan, a five-star property with rooms starting from just £101 per night, featuring proximity to key attractions and a seasonal outdoor pool. Alternatively, the Erebuni Hotel Yerevan, situated on a quiet street near Republic Square, offers basic yet modern rooms for £47 per night, inclusive of breakfast.

Yerevan boasts numerous traditional Armenian eateries serving hearty local fare. Visitors can savor specialties like lavash flatbreads, dolma (stuffed vine leaves), and khorovats, a grilled meat dish typically prepared with pork, beef, or lamb.
