A mother of three tragically passed away just a few days after seeking medical attention at the Emergency Department. Kellie Montgomery, a 37-year-old from Co Down, visited Ulster Hospital on September 23 for complications related to endometriosis. Despite being assured of an overnight stay, she was discharged at 2 am and experienced discomfort while waiting outside in the cold. Kellie’s partner, John Fletcher, expressed concerns about her treatment, emphasizing her deteriorating condition during the visit.
Although there is no direct link between her passing and the care received at the Emergency Department, Kellie’s family remains uncertain about the circumstances surrounding her sudden death. John recounted the distressing experience at the hospital, highlighting the challenges faced by Kellie, including prolonged wait times and inadequate pain management.
Following initial assessments, Kellie was initially set to be sent home with pain medication, but a nurse recognized her worsening state and transferred her to another ward for further monitoring. Despite assurances of overnight care, Kellie was eventually discharged, leading to a series of unsettling events that culminated in her untimely demise at home.
John detailed the harrowing moments leading up to Kellie’s passing, describing how she was left in excruciating pain and distress after being told to leave the hospital due to bed constraints. Despite efforts to seek assistance and subsequent emergency medical attention, Kellie’s condition rapidly deteriorated, ultimately resulting in her passing.
In response to the tragic incident, The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust expressed deep condolences to Kellie’s loved ones. The Trust clarified the sequence of events following Kellie’s visit to the Emergency Department, emphasizing their efforts to provide appropriate care and support during her time at the hospital.
