A court appearance is imminent for a woman facing arson charges in connection with two significant wildfires near Manchester. Firefighters have been actively combatting the fires at Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham and Tintwistle Moor near Glossop, with the incidents classified as major emergencies. Concerns have been raised about local air quality due to the large plumes of smoke billowing from the affected areas.
The arrest of a 20-year-old woman, identified as Shania Care-Slede from Market Street, Hyde, was made in relation to the Dovestone wildfire. She is accused of aggravated arson, endangering lives recklessly, and dangerous driving. Care-Slede has been detained and is scheduled to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on July 14.
Authorities from the Greater Manchester Police stated that investigations into the Dovestone Reservoir fire are ongoing, with efforts to identify any additional individuals involved. The community’s cooperation in providing video evidence has been appreciated, while urging against speculative discussions online now that legal proceedings are underway.
The fire incidents at Dovestone and Tintwistle have enveloped several parts of Greater Manchester in smoke, prompting the deployment of around 70 firefighters, 11 fire engines, and four wildfire units to manage the situation. Detective Inspector Andrew Day emphasized the continued investigation to identify any further suspects related to the incidents and urged the public to assist with relevant information or footage. It was clarified that Care-Slede is not linked to the Tintwistle fire.
The wildfire at Tintwistle, which began nearly three weeks ago during a heatwave, has consumed an area equivalent to 350 football pitches, posing a prolonged firefighting challenge. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that full operations would resume to tackle the ongoing blaze.
