Kira Cousins managed to convince her friends and family that she was expecting a baby and later “gave birth” to a lifelike doll named Bonnie-Leigh Joyce. The 22-year-old admitted her deception in a now-deleted Instagram post, revealing the reasons behind her elaborate hoax.
Over a period of nine months, Kira went to great lengths to maintain the illusion of pregnancy, using a fake baby bump and sharing updates on social media, including videos of the doll’s movements and a gender-reveal celebration. Friends and relatives were unaware of the truth and even gifted her expensive items, such as a £1,000 pram, for the supposed baby.
Furthering the deceit, Kira pretended to have delivered a baby girl with a heart condition and prevented anyone from touching the doll by claiming it was undergoing medical checks. Eventually, suspicions arose when the baby did not exhibit typical behaviors, leading Kira to confess her actions and express regret for the deception.
In a public statement on Instagram, Kira from Airdrie, Scotland, acknowledged her wrongdoing, admitting to fabricating the entire pregnancy, birth, and subsequent events. She apologized for betraying the trust of her loved ones and expressed a desire to seek help and address her mental health issues.
The truth came to light when Kira’s friend noticed the removal of all images and videos of Bonnie-Leigh from their conversations. Upon confronting the baby’s father, it was confirmed that the baby was, in fact, a doll. The friend expressed shock and disbelief at the elaborate charade orchestrated by Kira, who had misled everyone with false scan photos and health updates.
