A woman was fatally stabbed in a Barcelona suburb in what authorities believe to be a random attack on the street. A disturbing photo of a man wielding the weapon allegedly used in the assault surfaced overnight as police announced an arrest.
The tragic incident occurred during daylight hours yesterday in Esplugues de Llobregat, close to Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium and the residences of former football stars Gerard Pique and Dani Alves. Law enforcement is working to determine if there was any prior connection between the assailant and the victim, whose age and nationality have not been disclosed.
Initial reports suggest that the stabbing was arbitrary, with no known romantic involvement between the victim and the suspect. The victim, described as “young” and potentially of Asian descent, sustained multiple stab wounds to the throat, chest, and stomach.
During the altercation, a 50-year-old man was also injured while attempting to intervene, suffering arm wounds that are not considered life-threatening. The violent incident took place in a residential neighborhood near Sant Joan Deu Hospital around 11 a.m. yesterday.
The alleged perpetrator, dressed in jeans and a hoodie and carrying a large black backpack, was apprehended in Barcelona’s Les Corts neighborhood around noon. Esplugues de Llobregat Town Hall expressed condolences for the victim’s family and denounced all forms of violence in the community.
The Mossos D’Esquadra regional police force confirmed the arrest of the suspected assailant, emphasizing their ongoing collaboration with local authorities to investigate the matter. The town declared two days of official mourning, starting at midnight, in honor of the local woman who lost her life.
Law enforcement responded to the scene following reports of the attack, but unfortunately, the victim succumbed to her injuries. No evidence of terrorism as a motive has been uncovered, as shown by footage of a forensic tent shielding the scene from the public.
