“Woman Fired Over Tattoos on First Day Sparks Outrage”

Date:

A young woman was let go from her job at a prestigious Scottish golf club just 15 minutes into her first day because of her visible tattoos, despite having disclosed them during her interview. Abbie Foote, 25, expressed her shock at being sent home immediately upon starting her shift, as she had openly displayed her arm and neck tattoos during the final interview. Her social media post detailing the incident garnered significant attention, with over 866,000 views and 56,800 likes.

Abbie, a resident of Carnoustie, Scotland, emphasized her surprise at the club’s reaction to her tattoos, as she had previously worked there with visible body art. The club reportedly cited a policy against “job stopper” tattoos on the face, neck, and hands as the reason for her dismissal. Abbie had returned to her former position at Carnoustie Golf Links, where she had worked during a previous summer season with tattoos, including a recent addition on her neck.

Despite receiving a contract of employment after a successful re-interview where her tattoos were visible, Abbie’s first day took an unexpected turn when she was called aside by HR and informed of her dismissal due to her tattoos not aligning with the new buyer’s preferences. She tried to negotiate by offering to cover her tattoos during work hours but was unsuccessful.

The sudden dismissal left Abbie devastated, especially after resigning from her previous job to return to the golf course. She expressed her frustration at the lack of clarity regarding the tattoo policy in her contract or handbook. Colleagues and team members showed support and disbelief at the situation, with some accompanying her to seek an explanation from the office.

Subsequently, a team leader documented the details of the dismissal meeting, revealing that the policy change regarding tattoos was not widely known among staff. Abbie later received an email explaining that her application had not been fully considered in light of the uniform policy prohibiting visible tattoos in customer-facing roles.

Despite accepting a week’s wages as compensation, Abbie viewed it as inadequate and described it as “hush money.” She remained resolute in addressing the unfair treatment she faced due to her tattoos and the lack of transparency surrounding the club’s policies. Requests for comments from Carnoustie Golf Links were made but remained unanswered.
