A woman, Kirsty Moore, shared her distressing experience of developing a brain tumor and a bulging eye allegedly linked to her long-term use of a contraceptive injection for over two decades. Moore, 37, initiated the use of the Depo-Provera shot by Pfizer at the age of 16 and ceased the medication in 2021 upon discovering its potential association with meningiomas, a form of non-cancerous brain tumors. The Scottish resident underwent four surgeries to address the tumor’s growth on an optic nerve and has now resorted to a six-week radiotherapy regimen to impede its progression.
Expressing the detrimental impact on her life, Moore highlighted the challenges faced during multiple invasive surgeries and the subsequent recovery process. She emphasized the emotional toll caused by the disfigurement of her face, resulting in permanent visual impairment. Moore criticized the lack of prior warning regarding the injection’s risks, underscoring the need for greater awareness among women to prevent such health crises.
Recent research published in the British Medical Journal in 2024 revealed a substantial heightened risk of meningioma brain tumors associated with prolonged Depo-Provera use. The study indicated a fivefold increase in meningioma diagnosis among women utilizing the contraceptive compared to non-users. Moore, alongside fellow affected individuals in Scotland, raised concerns over the absence of risk disclosure during their prolonged medication usage.
In response to the escalating legal actions, approximately 2,500 American women are pursuing compensation from Pfizer, with a group of Scottish women represented by Thompsons Scotland initiating legal proceedings against the pharmaceutical company. Patrick McGuire of Thompsons Solicitors Scotland expressed solidarity with the affected individuals, emphasizing the pursuit of justice through collective legal action.
Pfizer, in a statement, prioritized patient safety and defended the established efficacy and safety profile of Depo-Provera based on its extensive global approval history. The company encouraged individuals to consult healthcare professionals for any concerns or adverse effects. The Mirror sought comments from Pfizer on the ongoing developments.
