“World’s Largest Wildlife Crossing to Impact Animal Safety”

Date:

Global temperatures saw a decrease in 2025, but concerns persist regarding the ongoing impacts of climate change on global communities. Wildlife faces significant threats due to changing habitats and worsening environmental conditions.

Despite these challenges, numerous organizations and advocates are working towards creating safer environments for animals worldwide. One approach involves constructing infrastructure to facilitate wildlife movement over or around man-made obstacles.

An outstanding example is the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, currently being built northwest of Los Angeles. Once finished, it will be the world’s largest animal crossing. The £68 million project, spanning the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, has been in the planning stages for decades.

Construction on the site began in early 2022 with an initial opening target set for early 2026. However, due to adverse weather conditions causing significant delays, the launch date has been postponed to November 2026. Beth Pratt, a project spokesperson, explained that storms necessitated redoing work on the massive supports multiple times due to soil compaction issues.

Despite the nearly year-long delay in completion, optimism remains high regarding the positive impact the crossing will have on local wildlife. Projections indicate a substantial decrease in animal fatalities caused by vehicle collisions, similar to a crossing near Salt Lake City, Utah, which reduced such incidents by 77%.

Beth, also serving as California’s regional director for the National Wildlife Federation, emphasized the importance of finding solutions to protect the area’s wildlife. The bridge is named after philanthropist Wallis Annenberg, who passed away at 86 and was pivotal in the project’s development.

Wallis was known for her support of environmental causes, as well as her advocacy for science and education initiatives. Following her death, her family highlighted her unwavering spirit and commitment to preserving wildlife and knowledge.
