Amid the challenging times of the Battle of Britain, it would have appeared improbable that the concrete shelters constructed to protect against the Luftwaffe would one day welcome cheerful holidaymakers with their bags.
The Standby Generator Bunker in Ringstead, Dorset, offers a unique holiday experience. This converted former World War II radar facility, built in 1941, originally housed a vital generator that ensured the continuous operation of the Chain Home radar network in case of a power grid failure. It was one of six underground spaces at the former RAF Ringstead site.
The bunker’s primary function was to provide backup power for a nearby transmitter bunker that emitted radio signals into the Channel. These signals would bounce back to a receiver upon detecting enemy aircraft, with the information then relayed to RAF Fighter Command for interception of German bombers before reaching British towns and cities.
Following the victory in 1945, RAF Ringstead continued as a Rotor station during the early years of the Cold War to counter the Soviet threat. The generator bunker was decommissioned in 1956 and remained vacant for nearly seventy years, gradually being reclaimed by nature.
Now meticulously refurbished as a luxury holiday rental, this Grade II listed structure was transformed into a holiday cottage in late 2024. The owners preserved original wartime features while outfitting it with modern amenities to cater to 21st-century holidaymakers.
Upon my arrival on a pleasant September day, the bunker appeared immaculate. The adaptation of this once-utilitarian space into a relaxing retreat was evident. Comfortable furnishings and a well-equipped kitchen adorned the spacious open-plan living area, all overlooking a vast window.
The property features three bedrooms spread across two levels, including a double room, accommodating up to eight guests. The walls are adorned with wartime memorabilia, including civilian posters and photographs showcasing the Chain Home network and RAF aircraft.
Noteworthy is the stunning coastal view of the English Channel from a blast-shaped opening in the concrete structure. Guests can enjoy lunch or a glass of wine on the balcony, offering a perspective once vigilantly monitored by the military, now a peaceful setting for relaxation.
During our stay, we explored Ringstead Bay and the quaint town of Osmington Mills. Subsequently, we sought refuge at the Smuggler’s Inn amidst a weather warning, relishing a hearty roast and the lively atmosphere of the historic pub.
Our itinerary included a visit to the iconic Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch sculpted by the sea over millennia. The turbulent sea provided a spectacular display as we marveled at the crashing waves against the arch, capturing the attention of tourists taking photos on the beach.
We ventured to Lulworth Cove, a picturesque bay encircled by dramatic cliffs and hills, where the Saltwater Sauna by the Weld Estate offered a unique seaside experience. Our exploration concluded with a delightful indulgence in the local sausage rolls by the harbor.
My time in Dorset was a delightful escape, embracing a fraction of the region’s charm while reveling in the distinctive accommodation provided by the Standby Generator Bunker.
