Yvette Cooper Slams Blair’s UK-US Support Stance

Date:

Yvette Cooper has criticized Tony Blair for suggesting that the UK should have supported the US from the beginning of its actions in Iran.

The Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of learning from the mistakes of the Iraq War and stressed that decisions should prioritize Britain’s national interests. Cooper defended Keir Starmer, stating that the government will prioritize substantive actions over social media posts following criticism from Donald Trump.

Reports emerged that Tony Blair advocated for UK support for the US from the outset of the Iran situation. Cooper highlighted the need to heed the lessons from the Iraq conflict, expressing her disagreement with Blair’s stance during an interview.

Cooper emphasized the necessity of acting in the UK’s national interest, stating that blindly aligning with the US or completely opposing their actions is not beneficial. She underscored Starmer’s responsibility to act in the best interests of British citizens.

In response to questions about labeling Tony Blair as a “poodle,” Cooper stressed the importance of learning from past mistakes and commended Starmer for his approach to international issues.

Labour MP Jon Trickett criticized Blair’s intervention in foreign affairs, suggesting that silence from him would be preferable. The UK government faced backlash from Trump after refusing to allow the US to launch strikes on Iran from British bases.

Cooper dismissed Trump’s recent outburst, emphasizing the need to focus on substantive decision-making rather than social media rhetoric. She highlighted the differences in approach between Starmer and Trump, advocating for a calm and steady approach to international issues.

Cooper reiterated the importance of prioritizing the UK’s national interest over aligning with other countries. She acknowledged areas of disagreement between the UK and the US but emphasized the strength of security and intelligence cooperation.

Trump took to social media to express his opinions on the UK’s stance on military matters, hinting at potential repercussions for the UK’s decisions. Cooper emphasized that the UK Prime Minister must act in the country’s best interests, even if it means disagreeing with other nations.
