“21-Year-Old Jailed for Fatal Crash After Obtaining License”

Date:

A young woman, aged 21, has been imprisoned for causing the deaths of two individuals in a car accident shortly after obtaining her driver’s license. Liberty Mitchell, who was 18 at the time of the incident, admitted to driving recklessly and leading to the fatalities of taxi driver Octavian Codreanu and his passenger, Moyra Whelan. The tragic collision occurred in December 2022 on the B4425 near Aldsworth, Gloucestershire, where Mitchell was driving at 96mph in a 60mph zone.

During the sentencing at Gloucester Crown Court, Judge Rupert Lowe handed Mitchell a six-year and eight-month jail term. The fatal crash involved multiple vehicles, including a grey Mini Cooper, black Audi A3, grey Polestar 2, and black Seat Leon, according to Gloucestershire Police, who reported the incident around 12:45pm on December 2, 2022.

Mitchell, who worked as a self-employed cleaner at the time, was en route between holiday cottages for work when the accident occurred. She was driving the Mini Cooper at high speed, attempting a risky overtaking maneuver that led to the collision with the taxi, as detailed by Gloucestershire Live.

The court learned that Mr. Codreanu and Ms. Whelan lost their lives at the scene. Mitchell faced charges of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and causing death while driving uninsured due to her insurance not covering work-related use of the vehicle. She pleaded guilty to all charges.

Several other victims of the crash sustained severe injuries, including fractured hips, broken ribs, abdominal wounds, and protruding shattered bones. Testimonies from survivors highlighted the lasting impact of the tragedy, with accounts of trauma and loss.

In her defense, Mitchell’s lawyer, Simon Stirling, attributed her actions to inexperience rather than intentional harm, emphasizing her recent acquisition of a driver’s license and lack of full comprehension of the risks involved in her driving decisions.

Judge Lowe, however, noted Mitchell’s reckless behavior as a new driver, highlighting her disregard for safety and the devastating consequences of her actions on the victims and their families. Mitchell was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison, with a requirement to serve half of the term in custody before being considered for release on license.

Sergeant Williams from the Serious Collision Investigation Team expressed relief that Mitchell pleaded guilty, sparing the victims’ families from a trial. The repercussions of the fatal collision were profound, affecting not only those directly involved but also witnesses and first responders who were impacted by the tragic events of that day. The community continues to extend support to those affected by the loss and injuries resulting from the incident.
