28 Years On: The Unsolved Disappearance of Diving Couple

Date:

The mysterious disappearance of Tom and Eileen Lonergan occurred 28 years ago. The couple vanished while diving near their boat tour on January 25, 1998, and were never seen again.

Tragedy struck as Tom, 33, and Eileen, 28, found themselves stranded in shark-infested waters about 40 miles off the coast of Queensland, facing a grim fate.

The Lonergans, after completing a Peace Corps mission in Tuvalu and Fiji, planned an adventurous trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Setting off from Cairns at 6.30 am, they headed to Port Douglas, a renowned beach resort for divers exploring the reef.

Meeting with the MV Outer Edge skipper, Geoffrey ‘Jack’ Nairn, the Lonergans embarked on a dive along with 24 other divers. Despite being experienced, they opted to explore the underwater corals independently during the trip.

Their final dive at St Crispin’s Reef was set for 2.30 pm. However, the dive master’s log book lacked details of their entry into the water, leading to confusion during the headcount before the boat’s departure back to Port Douglas.

Despite efforts to locate them, Tom and Eileen were inadvertently left behind on the reef. Their belongings were found on the vessel after it returned to port, prompting a delayed realization of their absence.

A search operation involving helicopters, boats, and aircraft was initiated, but it was called off after five days due to the slim chances of their survival after being lost at sea for days.

Subsequent findings of their diving equipment washed ashore raised alarming questions about their fate, with speculations ranging from accidental drowning to deliberate disappearance.

The coroner dismissed conspiracy theories, attributing the Lonergans’ demise to drowning or shark attacks. The skipper faced legal scrutiny but was ultimately acquitted, leading to the closure of his business.

To this day, the bodies of Tom and Eileen Lonergan remain undiscovered, leaving a haunting legacy that inspired the 2003 film “Open Water.”
