“5-Minute Daily Change Cuts Death Risk by 10%”

Date:

A recent study revealed that dedicating just five minutes a day to a simple change in our routine can lower the risk of premature death by 10%. The research, conducted by the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences, observed 95,000 middle-aged and elderly individuals in the UK, along with 40,000 participants from Norway, Sweden, and the US.

Findings from the UK Biobank segment of the study indicated that reducing sedentary time by 30 minutes daily could potentially decrease mortality by 4.5% among all study participants, except those already highly active. Additionally, incorporating an extra 10 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise was associated with a 15% decrease in mortality.

The study highlights the importance of even minimal physical activity in improving health outcomes, especially for older adults who may be less active. Dr. Daniel Bailey, an expert in sedentary behavior at Brunel University of London, emphasized the significance of small daily activity increments, such as brisk walks or light housework, in promoting well-being.

Co-author Professor Melody Ding from the University of Sydney emphasized the impact of attainable behavior goals on public health, noting that modest lifestyle changes can have a substantial effect on longevity. Another study, referenced in eClinicalMedicine and based on data from the UK Biobank, emphasized the benefits of adequate sleep, regular exercise, and a healthy diet in prolonging life expectancy.

The research suggests that slight improvements in sleep duration, physical activity levels, and dietary habits can lead to significant gains in both lifespan and healthspan. By making small adjustments, such as increasing daily sleep by five minutes, adding two minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise, and consuming half an additional portion of vegetables, individuals may extend their lifespan by up to a year.
