Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, is planning to enter the mobile phone market with budget-friendly phone plans, challenging traditional network providers. To access these discounted plans, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by Lidl, which also includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following in the footsteps of other unconventional competitors like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl already offers similar services in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. There are potential plans to expand this service to the UK, US, France, and Spain in the future.
Through a partnership with 1GLOBAL communications provider, Lidl will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), leveraging existing infrastructure to offer mobile plans rather than building its own network. This strategic move aligns with Lidl’s broader expansion plans, which include opening over 50 new stores in various locations across the UK.
The supermarket chain’s growth not only creates job opportunities but also aims to have a positive impact on local communities. By investing in new properties and expanding its reach, Lidl is committed to providing affordable and healthy food options while supporting British suppliers and regional growth.
Additionally, Schwarz Group, the parent company of Lidl, will acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL as part of the agreement, further solidifying its presence in the telecom sector. This investment reflects Schwarz’s digital vision, which includes ventures into cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI startups.
Analysts suggest that Lidl’s expansion into new markets could pose a challenge to established telecom providers, particularly in terms of pricing and convenience. The employment minister has praised Lidl’s investment for creating thousands of quality jobs and contributing to the economic well-being of communities nationwide.
