“Know Before You Go: Airlines’ Alcohol Rules Unveiled”

Date:

Air travel can be stressful due to the regulations on items allowed on flights, especially concerning liquids. Among these rules, alcohol has specific dos and don’ts regarding the quantity that passengers can bring on board, including duty-free purchases.

Passengers flying with major UK airlines like TUI, Jet2, British Airways, EasyJet, and Ryanair should review each company’s regulations before traveling to avoid issues at the airport.

One critical aspect for passengers to verify is the Alcohol By Volume (ABV) content of any alcoholic drinks they plan to bring. ABV measures the alcohol concentration in a given volume of beverage.

Airlines typically have guidelines on ABV percentages and may impose restrictions on in-flight alcohol consumption.

Although the law states that individuals must not board a plane while intoxicated, the specific regulations regarding alcohol consumption vary among airlines. To assist passengers, we have compiled a summary of each airline’s policies on alcohol consumption during flights.

For TUI, alcoholic beverages with less than 24% ABV face no restrictions, while those exceeding 70% ABV are not allowed. Drinks with ABV between 24% and 70% have specific requirements, such as being in retail packaging not exceeding 5 liters per person.

Passengers on Jet2 flights cannot consume their own alcohol during the journey, and the airline may impose restrictions on alcohol consumption at any time. Alcohol above 70% ABV is not permitted in hand or checked luggage.

Regarding British Airways flights, passengers can bring unlimited alcoholic drinks below 24% ABV on board. For ABV between 24% and 70%, there is a 5-liter limit, and anything above 70% ABV is prohibited.

EasyJet prohibits the consumption of alcohol not purchased during the flight. Passengers can bring alcohol bought elsewhere as long as it remains unopened and is under 70% ABV.

Ryanair, like other airlines, prohibits alcohol above 70% ABV on its flights. Duty-free items are allowed in the cabin, but the airline inspects bags to ensure compliance.
