Spain’s high-speed rail operator, iryo, has provided a significant update following the derailment of two high-speed trains yesterday evening. The incident occurred near the village of Adamuz in Cordoba, where a train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with another train heading from Madrid to Huelva.
The accident took place at 7:45 pm (1845 GMT) shortly after the Malaga to Madrid train departed Cordoba. The second train, operated by Spain’s public train company Renfe, bore the brunt of the impact. As a result, all high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been halted until Tuesday.
Iryo, the owner of the first derailed train, updated that the evacuation of all passengers on service 6189 has been successfully completed. Injured passengers are receiving treatment at hospitals, and the rest have been relocated as per local authorities’ directives. Updates on the situation will be provided through official channels, and a helpline for affected passengers has been set up at 900 001 402.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, with Spain’s transport minister describing it as a peculiar incident on a recently renovated track. The rescue operation is challenging due to the complexity of accessing some carriages, with three carriages falling down a four-meter embankment, complicating the recovery process.
Specialist teams from neighboring regions, including firefighters, paramedics, search and rescue personnel, medical experts, forensic scientists, and psychologists, have been mobilized to aid in the rescue efforts. The death toll has reached at least 24, with 15 critically injured, 30 seriously injured, and 170 with minor injuries reported. The authorities are still determining the number of missing individuals.
