Cyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run, Suspect Apprehended

Date:

Police have closed off a main city street and apprehended an individual following a deadly hit-and-run incident involving a car and a cyclist.

Authorities are seeking witnesses after a man lost his life on North Street in the Bedminster district of Bristol. The area was sealed off by law enforcement this afternoon as emergency responders rushed to aid the victim, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Law enforcement revealed that the car involved in the fatal collision fled the scene but was later located by the police. A man in his twenties was taken into custody on suspicion of causing death through dangerous driving, failure to stop, and driving while impaired, according to Avon and Somerset Police.

Reports indicate that at least two fire trucks and four police vehicles were present at the scene, with ambulance crews and a helicopter also responding to the incident.

In a statement issued later in the day, the police confirmed their investigation into the fatal crash in Bedminster earlier that day.

A spokesperson stated, “We received a report of a collision between a cyclist and a car on North Street in Bedminster around 12:30 pm. Despite efforts from bystanders and emergency services, the victim passed away at the scene.”

The next of kin of the deceased has been informed, and a dedicated family liaison officer will provide support during this challenging period. The police extended their condolences to the grieving family.

Authorities are urging anyone with information or relevant footage, such as doorbell, dashcam, or CCTV recordings, to come forward.

The road remains closed in both directions as the investigation continues. Motorists are advised to find alternative routes.

Earlier in the day, prior to the fatality announcement, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police stated, “We are currently at the scene of a serious collision on North Street in Bedminster, Bristol. We were alerted to the incident involving a cyclist and a car just after 12:30 pm.”

The police further mentioned that one person had been arrested in connection with the incident and was in police custody.

Several roads, including North Street at various junctions, have been shut down as the investigation progresses, and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

For any individuals present at the time of the collision or possessing relevant footage, the police have requested them to contact 101 and reference case number 5226009040.
