Just a short distance from the famous canals of Venice lies one of the world’s most eerie islands, with a haunting history that has turned the small landmass into a deserted wasteland.
Poveglia is made up of three smaller islands located south of the Venetian Lagoon, each with its own sinister past. One island, shaped like a small octagon, was once a military post, another has been engulfed by untamed vegetation, and the third is home to Poveglia’s abandoned ghost town.
In the 18th century, these islands served as a quarantine station for individuals afflicted with the black plague during various outbreaks. Initially, two ships carrying suspected plague victims were redirected to Poveglia, leading to the island becoming a breeding ground for the disease as more patients were left stranded on its shores.
It is estimated that tens of thousands of people lost their lives on the island and were buried in mass graves. Some disturbing reports suggest that bodies were burned, and human remains became part of the island’s soil.
By the 1900s, Poveglia took on a new, dark role as a mental institution. Local tales speak of a director who conducted brutal experiments before committing suicide by jumping from the bell tower.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence supporting the stories about the asylum director, the hospital did exist, and stories of ghosts and unexplained occurrences persist to this day.
Local residents believe that the restless spirits of plague victims and former patients still wander among the decaying structures. The island has been declared off-limits due to the unstable condition of its buildings. The hospital, prison blocks, and bell tower have been left to deteriorate over time, with collapsed staircases, crumbling roofs, and overgrown vegetation dominating the landscape.
As a result, Poveglia is now completely closed to the public. While special permission can be sought from authorities for research or filming purposes, regular tourists are prohibited from visiting. Even those granted access are warned about the hazards of exploring the dilapidated structures.
Despite the restrictions, one Reddit user claims to have managed to reach the island. Though their visit was uneventful, they described a lingering sense of being observed during their brief exploration.
The individual mentioned, “We didn’t have much time to thoroughly explore. The place is surprisingly vast, and distractions are plenty in every room. It was daytime, so nothing particularly paranormal happened. My husband used a word generator, and the word ‘Doctor’ came up, which made us wonder about the history of the place.”
Reflecting on the experience, they added, “Being there felt eerie, with a constant sensation of being watched from doorways, windows, and corridors.”
