A tragic incident occurred during a bungee jumping activity in northern Spain, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old Dutch girl named Vera Mol. The fatal accident happened in August 2015 when Vera jumped from a bridge before her safety rope was properly secured due to a misunderstanding caused by the instructor’s poor English skills.
Vera was part of a group of 13 Dutch and Belgian teenagers attempting the bungee jump near Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria. It was her first time engaging in such an extreme activity, and unfortunately, she fell approximately 32 meters into the riverbed below after misinterpreting the instructor’s unclear instructions.
The court revealed that the instructor’s inadequate command of English language played a significant role in the tragedy. The judges criticized the instructor for using confusing language and stated that his English proficiency was not sufficient for guiding foreigners in such high-risk activities.
The instructor and the director of the bungee jumping company faced legal actions for their roles in the incident. Flowtrack, the company operating the bungee jumping site, acknowledged the misunderstanding that led to Vera’s death, emphasizing that she was given confusing instructions and was not securely attached to the bridge before jumping.
In addition to the language mix-up, the court highlighted several safety failures contributing to the accident. These included the lack of safety measures during the ascent to the bridge, inadequate waiting area for the participants, and failure to verify Vera’s age, as she was underage for the activity and no parental consent was obtained.
Vera’s family has called for stricter safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future, emphasizing the need for better oversight and adherence to safety protocols in extreme sports activities.
