“Folk Duo Fights $200K Medical Bill After US Birth”

Date:

A folk duo, Issy Ferris and Archie Sylvester, faced a staggering $200,000 medical bill following the premature birth of their baby during a trip to the US. Issy, who was 33 weeks pregnant, fell ill during a performance in Nashville, initially mistaking her symptoms for severe food poisoning. However, she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication, leading to an emergency C-section for their son.

Despite having top-tier travel insurance, the couple initially struggled to get coverage for the hefty medical expenses. It took them ten months of battling, including hiring a lawyer, before the insurers eventually agreed to settle the bill. The experience highlighted the critical need for comprehensive travel insurance, especially when traveling while pregnant.

Issy, 25 at the time, had a smooth pregnancy until the unexpected health scare in Nashville. Lucky, their son, was born prematurely, weighing 4lbs 1oz, and required care in the neonatal intensive care unit. The couple faced challenges with their insurance company, which initially refused to cover the full extent of the medical costs, leading to a prolonged and stressful ordeal.

Legal intervention eventually secured victory for the couple, but the incident overshadowed the early months with their newborn. Their latest EP, “Songs That Saw Us Through,” features tracks that brought them solace during Lucky’s time in the NICU, offering comfort to others facing similar challenges.
