Keir Starmer has voiced his worries regarding the tragic shooting of an American nurse by agents of Donald Trump’s ICE. Alex Pretti was fatally shot during a protest in Minneapolis, becoming the second person killed by ICE agents in the city this month. Contrary to the Trump administration’s claims of a threat, eyewitnesses and video evidence showed that Pretti was holding a phone, not a gun, before being subdued.
When questioned about the incident, Starmer expressed concern over the tactics used by Trump’s ICE squads, acknowledging the global outrage surrounding the event. While en route to China, Starmer stated, “I haven’t reviewed all the details, but based on what I have seen, it is clearly concerning.”
Although the Prime Minister usually refrains from publicly criticizing the US President, tensions have escalated due to Trump’s recent actions, including his controversial remarks about British forces in Afghanistan. In response to Trump’s disparaging comments, Starmer condemned the remarks as “insulting and frankly appalling,” urging Trump to issue an apology.
Following backlash over his initial response to the deaths of protesters Pretti and Renee Good, Trump expressed remorse for the incidents. The border chief and the US Secretary of Homeland Security faced repercussions for their labeling of the deceased activists as “domestic terrorists.” Trump, in an interview on Fox News, expressed regret over the killings and acknowledged feeling sympathy for the families of the victims.
The recent developments have drawn widespread attention to the actions of ICE and sparked discussions on the handling of protests and law enforcement in the United States.
