Trump intervened to express concerns about the UK’s collaboration with China, labeling it as risky. He also mentioned Canada’s poor performance in dealing with China. Starmer, speaking in Shanghai, indicated that Trump’s remarks seemed more directed at Canada than the UK. He clarified that Trump is expected to visit China in April.
Responding to Trump’s comments, the UK PM highlighted the longstanding trade relationship with China and emphasized the potential benefits of expanding it. He underscored the economic significance of engaging with China, being the world’s second-largest economy and a key trading partner.
UK trade minister Sir Chris Bryant deemed it irrational for the UK to avoid involvement with China. When asked about Trump’s remarks, Bryant disagreed, citing Trump’s own friendly ties with President Xi and his upcoming visit to China in April.
The importance of fostering economic growth and job creation through enhanced trade with China was reiterated by UK officials, emphasizing the need to embrace opportunities rather than shying away from engagement.
