At least eight individuals have lost their lives, and over 80 individuals are unaccounted for following a landslide that occurred on Java island in Indonesia. The incident was triggered by heavy rainfall, leading to the bursting of river banks in the West Bandung district of West Java province on Saturday. The most severely impacted area, Pasir Kuning, saw eight fatalities, with numerous residences buried under mud and debris.

Efforts are currently underway to locate the 82 missing residents, as confirmed by Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson for the national disaster management agency. Fortunately, 24 individuals were able to escape the disaster. Rescuers are working tirelessly to sift through the mud, rocks, and fallen trees in a bid to find the missing individuals.

Following the tragedy, emergency response teams were promptly dispatched, according to Teten Ali Mungku Engkun, who leads West Java’s disaster management office. Immediate evacuations were carried out for residents near the affected area due to the risk of additional landslides.

Engkun highlighted the challenges faced during the search and rescue operations, citing the unstable ground and persistent heavy rainfall. Residents living in landslide-prone areas have been advised to remain vigilant for any signs of soil movement or unusual sounds, prompting them to evacuate promptly if necessary.
