Hari Budha Magar, a trailblazer in history, achieved a remarkable feat by conquering the Seven Summits challenge, making him the sole double amputee below the knee to accomplish this extraordinary feat. The final ascent took place on Mount Vinson in Antarctica, where Hari, aged 46, proudly planted The Mirror’s flag at the summit on January 7. Reflecting on his perilous journey, Hari described the constant risk of a fatal fall on the treacherous mountain slopes.
The Seven Summits challenge stands as the ultimate mountaineering milestone worldwide. This arduous task involves scaling the highest peaks on each continent, including Mount Everest in Nepal, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Denali in Alaska, Aconcagua in Argentina, Vinson Massif in Antarctica, Carstensz Pyramid in New Guinea, and Elbrus in Russia. Hari triumphed over all but Elbrus, a peak inaccessible to Westerners, opting to conquer France’s Mont Blanc instead, a remarkable achievement acknowledged by Guinness World Records.
Hari’s awe-inspiring journey is even more remarkable considering his past as a valiant ex-Gurkha and British Army veteran. Despite losing both legs in 2010 due to an IED explosion in Afghanistan, his resilience and determination shone through. Reunited with his family in Canterbury, Kent, Hari’s wife and children warmly welcomed him home with heartfelt celebrations, acknowledging the risks he undertook.
Using specially designed prosthetic legs for snow and ice terrains, Hari overcame numerous challenges during his mountainous conquests, including precarious climbs and potential limb loss due to extreme cold. Recounting a harrowing incident on Mount Blanc in 2019, Hari described a life-threatening moment when he and his guide narrowly avoided a fatal fall.
His Everest summit in 2023 presented the most daunting trial, navigating the perilous Khumbu Icefall and enduring oxygen depletion on the descent. Recognized with an MBE in 2024 for his contributions to disability awareness, Hari remains a vocal advocate for veterans’ rights, supporting Keir Starmer’s stance against disparaging remarks about Nato troops in Afghanistan.
