“National Lottery Makeover: UK to Offer £1 Billion Powerball Jackpot”

Date:

Lottery enthusiasts in the UK are in for a whopping opportunity to win a staggering £1 billion following a significant makeover of the National Lottery. Allwyn, the operator, has announced plans to introduce a UK edition of the renowned American Powerball game. This initiative will enable UK participants to pay £4 per line to join forces with players in the US in pursuing a collective jackpot exceeding £1 billion, payable over a span of 30 years to UK victors.

The collaboration between Allwyn and the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) in the US has paved the way for the introduction of Powerball in the UK, although the exact launch date remains undisclosed. Moreover, the National Lottery is set to offer players two opportunities to win for each £2 ticket purchased for its primary Lotto game. This enhancement, set to be implemented starting June 7, is anticipated to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires annually, escalating from approximately 140 to about 345.

This upcoming change signifies the most extensive transformation to the Lotto since its inception in 1994. The inaugural two-round draw is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, with subsequent draws to occur around 8 pm every Saturday and Wednesday. Allwyn’s Chief Executive, Andria Vidler, expressed enthusiasm, stating that they are committed to enriching the National Lottery with more games, entertainment, and innovation, following the completion of substantial upgrades to digital and retail channels.

By offering a diverse range of complementary games, the aim is to cater to a broad audience, reigniting interest, expanding the player base, and ensuring the National Lottery remains a prominent topic of discussion nationwide. The introduction of new games is expected to bolster contributions to charitable causes, with over 30% of ticket sales from the Powerball draw allocated to such causes. This move is projected to generate approximately £1 billion in additional funds over the initial five years.

Ms. Vidler emphasized the positive impact on charitable initiatives, highlighting the goal of doubling weekly returns to good causes from £30 million to £60 million by 2034. In 2025, total National Lottery sales, including retail ticket purchases, reached £8.1 billion, reflecting a 3.5% increase from the previous year. The proceeds generated for good causes amounted to over £1.7 billion, supporting various sectors such as health, education, arts, sports heritage, and charitable endeavors, while contributing £967 million in taxes.
