A young man has been sentenced to prison for providing ecstasy pills that led to the death of his teenage girlfriend. Lennix Hughes, aged 16, passed away after consuming the Class A drug at a gathering. Jay Conway, her 18-year-old boyfriend at the time, was the one who supplied her with the pills. Despite efforts by paramedics at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Scotland, she tragically succumbed to the effects of the drug.
Now 21, Conway tearfully received a 15-month prison term for distributing the drug on the night that resulted in the teenager’s fatal overdose. Additionally, he confessed to selling Class B cannabis over a period exceeding two months, with the court describing the operation as somewhat sophisticated.
During the trial, it was revealed that Miss Hughes died from ingesting MDMA wraps provided by Conway at his residence in March 2023. Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith expressed empathy for the family’s loss and acknowledged their unimaginable grief. While recognizing the moral responsibility placed on Conway, the sheriff emphasized the sentencing was not based on attributing her death solely to him.
Conway, based in Dundee, was engaged in a drug scheme involving encrypted communication and negotiating discounted rates for buying cannabis in bulk. He pleaded guilty to dealing ecstasy between March 3 and 4, 2023. A police search of his residence uncovered evidence of his involvement in cannabis distribution, including cash, scales, and grinders.
The investigation further revealed that Conway had purchased powdered MDMA and organized a gathering where he and friends consumed the drug. Tragically, post-mortem findings indicated a significant quantity of MDMA and other substances in Miss Hughes’ system at the time of her passing. The court recognized the devastating impact on the family and acknowledged their resilience throughout the legal proceedings.
