A man in his sixties, reportedly identified as MP Dan Norris, has been re-arrested by the Avon and Somerset Police on suspicion of various serious offenses, including rape, sexual assault, voyeurism, and upskirting. The individual, who is currently suspended from the Labour Party, was initially taken into custody last year on charges related to sexual offenses against a minor, rape, child abduction, and misconduct in public office.
Subsequently, the man has faced additional allegations, including rape involving a second woman, sexual assault against a third woman, and voyeurism and upskirting offenses against multiple women. The police have clarified that they are no longer actively investigating sexual offenses involving children, but the original rape and misconduct in public office inquiry is ongoing.
According to an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson, the alleged incidents took place between the 2000s and 2020s. Due to the sensitive and intricate nature of sexual offense investigations, the process may require a significant amount of time to conclude. The authorities are providing regular updates to the victims and ensuring they have access to necessary support services. The individual in question, who remains unnamed by the police, is currently on conditional bail.
Dan Norris, who was previously suspended from the Labour Party upon his arrest, serves as the Member of Parliament for North East Somerset and Hanham since the 2024 general election, defeating prominent Conservative figure Jacob Rees-Mogg. He also held the position of Mayor of the West of England from 2021 to 2025 before stepping down following his parliamentary election.
Having previously served in Parliament from 1997 to 2010 representing the Wansdyke constituency, which partly overlaps with his current seat, Norris held ministerial roles under Gordon Brown and served as an assistant whip under Tony Blair. Despite calls for his resignation and a petition with nearly 3,000 signatures, he has chosen not to step down as reported by the BBC. His attendance in Parliament has been absent since his release on police bail, and if charged, convicted, or imprisoned, he would lose his MP position.
