A nursing student, Corey Halstead, 36, endured a traumatic car fire incident in April 2024, leaving him with extensive burns on half of his body. Following the accident, Corey underwent a staggering 50 surgeries over a period of less than two years to address the severe burns on his face, neck, torso, arms, and legs.
Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Corey expressed the intense fear and uncertainty he felt as he grappled with the possibility of not surviving. He vividly recalled the panic and disbelief he experienced while his body was engulfed in flames, emphasizing the profound instinct to stay alive amidst the chaos.
Despite the swift and uncontrollable nature of the car fire, Corey emphasized the overwhelming impact it had on him, noting the emotional turmoil he faced upon realizing the gravity of the situation. The immediate aftermath of the accident, including the wait for emergency services and his subsequent treatment in intensive care, was described as a blur of pain, shock, and confusion.
Throughout his recovery journey, Corey underwent numerous surgical procedures, including skin grafts and reconstructive surgeries, to address the deep burns he sustained. He highlighted the physical and emotional toll of the treatments, acknowledging the mix of fear and trust he placed in his medical team while navigating the challenges of healing and rehabilitation.
Corey’s transition from hospitalization to post-discharge care presented additional hurdles, particularly in securing safe and suitable housing due to his ongoing medical needs. Despite facing obstacles, Corey eventually found stability through a housing voucher and established the non-profit organization, Healing Home Group, to provide support and transitional housing for adult burn survivors and their families.
Driven by his personal experience, Corey aims to raise awareness about the long-term challenges faced by burn survivors beyond hospitalization. His vision for the future includes pursuing medical school to specialize in burn surgery, emphasizing the resilience and support that have guided him through one of the toughest periods of his life.
