Police Search Properties of Ex-US Ambassador Mandelson

Date:

Police conducted searches at properties owned by Peter Mandelson in Wiltshire and Camden, London, following allegations of leaking sensitive information to Jeffrey Epstein. Mandelson, a former US ambassador, is under investigation for allegedly disclosing confidential data to Epstein post the 2008 financial crisis during his tenure in Gordon Brown’s government.

Authorities, including specialist crime units, carried out the searches at the luxurious residences. Mandelson has denied any criminal involvement regarding his association with Epstein, who passed away in a New York prison in 2019. The search at the London townhouse, situated near Regent’s Park, saw Mandelson present in the house during the entry by police.

While plain-clothed officers were seen entering the property with empty boxes, Mandelson’s partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, was observed conversing with a police officer at the rear window later in the evening. The London property, valued at approximately £7.6 million, features upscale amenities and was home to notable personalities like Kate Moss, Jude Law, and Sienna Miller when Mandelson moved in back in 2012.

Additionally, a search was carried out at a farmhouse in Wiltshire, reportedly rented by Mandelson from financier Nat Rothschild. Mandelson, who relocated to the farmhouse in 2014, described it as a modest residence adjacent to a herdsman’s family.

Hayley Sewart, deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, confirmed the ongoing searches at the two locations. The investigation pertains to alleged misconduct in public office by a 72-year-old individual, without any arrests made thus far.

Recent disclosures by the US Department of Justice unveiled correspondences between Mandelson and Epstein, suggesting potential leaks of governmental information by Mandelson post the financial crisis. Documents revealed discussions involving Mandelson lobbying for matters related to bankers’ bonuses and confirming imminent financial decisions.

Notably, accusations by Keir Starmer against Mandelson for dishonesty in his ties with Epstein have sparked further controversy. Starmer expressed regret for appointing Mandelson as an ambassador, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and pledging accountability for past misjudgments.
