European leaders have issued a stern warning to the US President following concerns that Donald Trump may attempt to invade Greenland. The situation escalated as NATO troops arrived in Greenland, prompting a French military presence in the capital city of Nuuk, along with soldiers from the UK, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.
French diplomat Olivier Poivre d’Arvor emphasized the significance of NATO’s presence on the island, stating that it serves as a demonstration to the US. This development unfolded after Danish officials engaged in high-level talks with American politicians JD Vance and Marco Rubio, with no resolution reached as Trump reportedly remains intent on “conquering” Greenland.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister expressed a fundamental disagreement with Trump’s ambitions for the Arctic island, affirming that the Kingdom does not support such actions. The joint NATO exercises, known as Operation Arctic Endurance, aim to bolster military presence on Greenland, enhancing European and transatlantic security.
The UK confirmed the dispatch of a military officer to participate in reconnaissance activities ahead of the Arctic Endurance exercise, emphasizing solidarity with President Trump’s security concerns in the High North. Germany also announced plans to send a small troop contingent to Nuuk temporarily, while Denmark’s Prime Minister cautioned that any attempt by Trump to acquire Greenland could jeopardize NATO’s future.
In justification of his interest in Greenland, Trump cited the need to prevent China and Russia from gaining control over the island, stressing the importance of ownership for defense purposes. The US President hinted at pursuing this goal through diplomatic or forceful means, underscoring the strategic significance he places on Greenland.
